More Fruits or Fewer?

When talking about a healthy diet most people agree that fruit is good for your health. However, are the fruits you picked up really help you to maintain your health? Let’s talk about fruits and their different characters and see which fruits are more suitable for your condition!

Chinese medicine considers that different fruits have different characters. We can roughly classify them as cold – cool – mild – warm – hot. This is not about their temperature; this is about their effects to the body when people eat them. In the mean time, different people have their own conditions as well. Some people may have internal cold condition; on the other hand, some people may have internal hot condition. People with cold internal conditions are better to choose warm or hot character fruits, and people with hot internal conditions are better to choice cool or cold character fruits. Fruits with mild characters are suitable for almost everyone. For example, if I have internal hot condition and I eat some hot character fruits, as a result I may feel not so comfortable. The common symptoms are a heart burn, constipation, sore spots in mouth, more phlegm, and so on. So, choose your fruits correctly are important to maintain your health.

The common fruits and their characters are listed as below:

1. Apple (cool)
People with internal cold condition should not choose apple as the first choice of fruit. It can help increase metabolism.

2. Banana (cool)
Banana is good for constipation patients. It can moisture the intestine and increase bowel movement. But it is not suitable for diarrhea patients.

3. Coconut (mild to slightly warm)
Coconut is good fruit for weak or tiredness people. It can nourish the body. But people with internal heat are not suitable for taking coconut.

4. Grape (mild to warm)
Grape can nourish blood and kidney. It is good for the heart as well.

5. Lemon (mild)
Lemon is lady’s fruit and good for skin. Fresh lemon juice with warm water and a little bit salt can help clean-up phlegm. It is also help to release flu syndromes such as sore throat.

6. Longan (warm to hot)
Longan can nourish the body. But it is not suitable for people with gout.

7. Lychee (hot)
Lychee can warm up kidney. However, it is not suitable for people with gout or diabetes.

8. Mango (mild to slightly warm)
Mango is good for skin moisture and has effect for decrease blood pressure. But it is not suitable for people with eczema or asthma.

9. Orange (mild)
Orange can help enhancing the immune system.

10. Pawpaw (mild to slightly cool)
It is good to the digest system.

11. Peach (warm)
Peach is good for youthful skin. But do not eat too much, it may cause stomach uncomfortable.

12. Pear (cool to cold)
Pear is good fruit for hot coughing patients.

13. Pineapple (warm)
Pineapple is high in fibre and can help for digest system. But people with asthma are not suitable to take pineapple which can trigger allergy reaction.

14. Rock melon (cool)
It is not suitable for coughing or asthma patients.

15. Watermelon (cool to cold)
Watermelon is the ideal fruit for summer. It can clean the heat and dampness inside body. However, it is not suitable for people with stomach cold.
